Cha Cha Cha - Basic Step

The Basic Step is a simple Cha Cha Cha step danced over 8 beats / 2 bars of music. The forward and backward movements are called 'breaks' and movements to the side are called 'chasses'. The Basic Step consists of a forward break, chasse to mans left, backward break and chasse to mans right. You can then repeat as often as you want to.

The Basic Step is very similar to another Cha Cha Cha step called the 'Basic In Place' the only difference being that the chasse parts of the 'Basic Step' move to either the left or right but in the Basic In Place the chasses are done on the spot with just the body weight being shifted from foot to foot.

Once the Basic Step is mastered it can be interspersed between other, more complicated moves, to allow thinking time for the novice or simply as a useful progression into or out of a move. The chasse part of the move is the fundamental 'Cha Cha Cha' movement that repeats in one form or another throughout the dance.

Count 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1, 2, 3, 4 and
Notes Stepping to the side on the first beat ensures that you 'break' ( Step backwards or forwards) on the second beat of the bar. Performing your breaks on the second beat of the bar better fits the characteristic hip movements of the Cha Cha with the accents in Cha Cha music. This does however make the count seem slightly different to other Cha Cha moves.

All steps should be taken by placing the ball of the foot onto the floor first and then lowering the heel once your weight is transferred. The heel should be raised first when transferring weight off of a foot. This should allow the ball of the foot to remain in contact with the floor for the maximum amount of time.
