Cha Cha Cha - New York

The New York, also known as the New Yorker, is a very simple variation on the Basic Step. The timing and rhythm remains the same as the Basic Step but a 1/4 pivot is added after each chasse to allow you to step through with your inside leg ( the leg nearest your partner as you pivot. ) This results in the step being danced along a line rather than having the forward and backward motions of the Basic Step.

The New York can be danced several times in succession if desired and can easily be entered in to, and exited, by dancing a Basic Step.

New York Mens / Ladies Steps
Lead in to the New York by doing the first 6 steps of the Basic Step then continue as below.
Start facing your partner, feet shoulder width apart, loosely holding with both hands.
Step 1
Beat 1
Men - Pivot your upper body 1/4 turn to your right opening up your hold so that you are mans left hand to ladies right hand and step forward with your left foot placing your weight onto it. Do not move your right foot. You and your partner should now be side by side facing the same direction.
Ladies - Pivot your upper body 1/4 turn to your left opening up your hold so that you are mans left hand to ladies right hand and step forward with your right foot placing your weight onto it. Do not move your left foot.You and your partner should now be side by side facing the same direction.
Step 2
Beat 2
Men - Place your weight on to your right foot.
Ladies - Place your weight on to your left foot.
Step 3
Beat 3
Men - Pivot 1/4 turn back to face your partner as you step to your left with your left foot and take hold again with your free hand.
Ladies - Pivot 1/4 turn back to face your partner as you step to your right with your right foot and take hold again with your free hand.
Step 4
Beat 3.5
Men - Close your right foot to the side of your left foot.
Ladies - Close your left foot to the side of your right foot.
Step 5
Beat 4
Men - Step out to the left with your left foot.
Ladies - Step out to the right with your right foot.
Step 6
Beat 5
Men - Pivot your upper body 1/4 turn to your left opening up your hold so that you are mans right hand to ladies left hand and step forward with your right foot placing your weight onto it. Do not move your left foot. You and your partner should now be side by side facing the same direction.
Ladies - Pivot your upper body 1/4 turn to your right opening up your hold so that you are mans right hand to ladies left hand and step forward with your left foot placing your weight onto it. Do not move your right foot.
You and your partner should now be side by side facing the same direction.
Step 7
Beat 6
Men - Place your weight on to your left foot.
Ladies - Place your weight on to your right foot.
Step 8
Beat 7
Men - Pivot 1/4 turn back to face your partner as you step to your right with your right foot and take hold again with your free hand.
Ladies - Pivot 1/4 turn back to face your partner as you step to your left with your left foot and take hold again with your free hand.
Step 9 Beat 7.5 Men - Close your left foot to the side of your right foot.
Ladies - Close your right foot to the side of your left foot.
Step 10
Beat 8
Men - Step out to the right with your right foot. Once completed you can the repeat by going back to beat one.
Ladies - Step out to the left with your left foot. Once completed you can the repeat by going back to beat one.
Count 1, 2, 3 and 4, 1, 2, 3 and 4
Notes All forward steps after each pivot should be done with the inside leg, that is the leg closest to your partner. When stepping through do not lift your back foot off of the ground
